A group of like-minded development professionals inspired by the humanitarian work of Dr. Jack Preger, a British doctor who dedicated his life to serving the pavement dwellers and slum communities of Kolkata since 1971, runs DSS. The organization works with the same spirit of compassion and service for marginalized communities.
Rapid urbanisation and climate migration from the Sundarbans region have led to increasing populations in Kolkata’s slums. Families migrating to the city often settle in overcrowded slum areas where access to basic services such as healthcare, education, and nutrition remains limited.
DSS Kolkata works to address these challenges by implementing integrated programmes focused on healthcare, education, and improved living conditions among urban poor communities.
DSS Kolkata has been working tirelessly to ensure that children and marginalized communities have access to quality education, nutrition, and opportunities for a better future. Our education programme focuses on addressing the multiple challenges faced by children from underprivileged backgrounds, helping them remain in school, learn effectively, and build pathways towards sustainable livelihoods.
At present, we work closely with two government-supported schools—Haltu Kishalaya Shiksha Sadan and Children Welfare Association School. Our interventions are designed to bridge critical gaps in the education ecosystem through:
In addition to our school-based interventions, DSS Kolkata operates three Non-Formal Education Centres located in Topsia, Tangra, and Khidderpore, reaching approximately 300 children and young people from marginalized communities. These centres provide academic support from the primary level up to Class XII, along with mentoring and career guidance to help students pursue higher education and meaningful careers.
Recognizing the broader needs of the community, our programme also includes:
Through these integrated interventions, DSS Kolkata is working to break the cycle of poverty by creating access to education, nutrition, skills, and opportunities. However, the growing needs of the communities we serve require additional resources and support.
We sincerely appeal to the Tata Run Philanthropic Platform to partner with us in strengthening and expanding these initiatives. This support will directly contribute to improving educational outcomes, reducing dropout rates, enhancing community resilience, and creating brighter futures for hundreds of children and families.
Together, we can empower vulnerable communities through education, nutrition, and skill development, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive.
Help us raise funds for our specific needs.
