A group of like-minded development professionals inspired by the humanitarian work of Dr. Jack Preger, a British doctor who dedicated his life to serve the pavement dwellers and slum communities of Kolkata since 1971, runs DSS Kolkata. The organization works with the same spirit of compassion and service for marginalized communities.
Rapid urbanisation and climate migration from the Sundarbans region have led to increasing populations in Kolkata’s slums. Families migrating to the city often settle in overcrowded slum areas where access to basic services such as healthcare, education, and nutrition remains limited.
DSS Kolkata works to address these challenges by implementing integrated programmes focused on healthcare, education, livelihood and improved living conditions among urban poor communities.
Every day, hundreds of children from marginalized communities walk into school on an empty stomach, having missed their first meal of the day, while others return each evening to overcrowded and unsafe shelters that offer little space for learning or growth. With parents working long hours as daily wage labourers, children are often left without the care, guidance, and support they need during their formative years. Poor nutrition, irregular attendance, and limited access to quality learning opportunities continue to place them at a severe disadvantage. Without timely intervention, these challenges increase the risk of school dropout, child labour, and a lifetime trapped in poverty.
At present, we work closely with two government-supported schools—Haltu Kisholoy School and Children Welfare Association School. Our interventions are designed to bridge critical gaps in the education ecosystem through:
DSS Kolkata is also working to change this reality by supporting 300 vulnerable children through its Non-Formal Education Centres in Topsia, Tangra, and Khidderpore, providing education, nutrition, and holistic development opportunities.
