AKB Memorial Trust is a Kolkata-based non-profit organisation founded in memory of Arun Kumar Bakshi and Kabyasree Bakshi, dedicated to serving individuals with neurodevelopmental and physical disabilities. Through its flagship unit, DWish, the Trust offers a special school namely URJA, multi-disciplinary therapy, vocational training,NIOS preparation for Persons with special needs, parental counselling and community awareness programmes, operating on a low-cost, inclusive model. Its governance involves a board of committed social activists and professionals, and its mission centres on enabling a life of dignity, productivity and inclusion for persons with special needs and their families.
AKB Memorial Trust, through its unit Urja Special School, is committed to providing quality education and rehabilitation services to children with special needs including autism spectrum disorder (ASD), Intellectual Disability, ADHD, Learning Disabilities, and multiple disabilities.
The school currently serves children from diverse socio-economic backgrounds, many of whom require individualized educational support and an accessible learning environment.
To ensure effective learning outcomes, the school plans to upgrade its classroom infrastructure through the procurement of structured teaching furniture and accessibility enhancements.
Structured teaching is a widely recognized educational approach that helps children with special needs understand routines, improve concentration, develop independence, and participate more actively in classroom activities. The existing furniture is insufficient to meet the growing needs of students and does not adequately support individualized learning plans.
Under this project, Urja Special School will install specially designed classroom chairs and tables that promote proper seating posture, organized workspaces, and effective teacher-student interaction.
The furniture will be used for one-to-one instruction, small-group learning, therapy sessions, and functional academic activities.
The project will also focus on creating a barrier-free environment within the school premises. Accessibility remains a significant challenge for children with disabilities and particularly those who require physical assistance.
To address this issue, the school proposes the installation of a compact accessibility escalator/lift system on the side of the staircase capable of supporting two persons at a time.
This facility will enable children, caregivers, and staff members with mobility challenges to access upper floors safely and independently.
Additional improvements may include safety handrails, accessible pathways, classroom organization systems, visual signage that enhance mobility and independence. These
improvements will contribute to a more inclusive and welcoming educational environment where every child can learn and participate without barriers.
The project aligns with the principles of inclusive education and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Quality Education and Reduced Inequalities.
Through this initiative, AKB Memorial Trust aims to create a model learning environment that empowers children with special needs and promotes equal opportunities for education and development.
