About Us

In the heart of Kolkata’s red-light districts, New Light, a registered charitable trust, emerges as a beacon of hope for children impacted by human trafficking, gender-based violence, and poverty. It transforms victims into survivors, offering safety, education, healthcare, and empowerment. From 9 children in 2000 to over 250
individuals today, New Light saves and nurtures with:
• Safe Shelters: Shielding children, providing safety through residential shelters and day creches
• Nutrition: Providing balanced wholesome meals to ensure healthy physical development
• Education: Enrolling all our children in government and private schools, providing remedial tuition support, extra curricular activities, and vocational training for well-rounded academic progress

  • Healthcare: Offering comprehensive medical care through our in-house clinic and associated diagnostic centres and hospitals; including HIV/AIDS ration support for those families that need it.
  • Empowerment: Providing leadership training opportunities to build the next generation of engaged and capable citizens.
  • Advocacy: Challenging systems perpetuating trafficking and gender-based violence.
Beyond direct beneficiaries, New Light serves wider communities, providing healthcare and education outreach to marginalized groups.

New Light’s impact is transformative, fostering laughter in place of fear, rebuilding dreams, and empowering communities to break cycles of exploitation.

Our Appeal

This appeal is for New Light Soma Memorial Home for Girls that honours the memory of a young girl from Kolkata’s red-light district who tragically passed away due to a lack of proper medical care. Her story inspired the creation of this 24×7 residential shelter for vulnerable girls aged 10 to 18, including daughters of sex workers and other marginalized adolescent girls at high risk of being trafficked into sex work.
The home provides a safe haven and opportunities for growth through its direct intervention in providing shelter, holistic nutrition, healthcare, formal education and vocational training. Co-curricular activities include computer skills, Indian classical and modern dance, music, boxing, and arts and crafts, equipping the girls with the tools to build confident and independent futures. Community outreach programs help the girls develop social skills and meaningful connections, while research projects foster critical thinking and independence. Recreational activities and celebrations provide opportunities for relaxation, camaraderie, and joy. These initiatives empower the girls to grow into confident, capable, and compassionate young women.
