In the heart of Kolkata's red-light districts, New Light, a registered charitable trust, emerges as a beacon of hope for children impacted by human trafficking, gender-based violence, and poverty. It transforms victims into survivors, offering safety, education, healthcare, and empowerment. From 9 children in 2000 to over 250
individuals today, New Light saves and nurtures with:
• Safe Shelters: Shielding children, providing safety through residential shelters and day creches
• Nutrition: Providing balanced wholesome meals to ensure healthy physical development
• Education: Enrolling all our children in government and private schools, providing remedial tuition support, extra curricular activities, and vocational training for well-rounded academic progress
• Healthcare: Offering comprehensive medical care through our in-house clinic and associated diagnostic centres and hospitals; including HIV/AIDS ration support for those families that need it.
• Empowerment: Providing leadership training opportunities to build the next generation of engaged and capable citizens.
•Advocacy: Challenging systems perpetuating trafficking and gender-based violence.
Beyond direct beneficiaries, New Light serves wider communities, providing healthcare and education outreach to marginalized groups.
New Light's impact is child-centred and transformative, fostering laughter in place of fear, rebuilding dreams, and empowering communities to break cycles of exploitation.
New Light
New Light  is a registered charitable trust operating in the red-light district of Kalighat,Kolkata, providing comprehensive community development services for vulnerable women and children. Established in 2000 with only nine children, the organization now supports more than 250 children and young adults through education, healthcare, shelter, nutrition, counselling, and livelihood programs.
The proposed fundraising initiative aims to strengthen and expand New Light’s ongoing programs that protect children from unsafe environments and help women move toward dignity, independence, and self-reliance. Many of the children supported by New Light are at high risk of trafficking, neglect, abuse, substance exposure, and school dropout due to the vulnerable conditions in which they live. The project creates safe spaces where children can study, receive nutritious meals, access healthcare, and participate in recreational and developmental activities.
The project will support shelter homes, community learning centres, healthcare interventions, and empowerment initiatives for women and young adults. Educational support includes formal schooling assistance, remedial education, digital learning, life-skills development, and vocational training opportunities for adolescents and young women. Healthcare initiatives include medical care, HIV/AIDS support, nutritional supplements, counselling, and mental health assistance.
New Light also runs livelihood and rehabilitation initiatives such as the Anchal Project, which provide women escaping exploitation with dignified income-generation opportunities through sanitary pad production and Kantha embroidery training. This program helps women become financially independent while rebuilding confidence and social inclusion.
Funds raised through this proposal will be utilized for:
The project aims to create long-term sustainable change by breaking the cycle of exploitation and poverty. By supporting vulnerable children and women with protection, education, healthcare, and livelihood opportunities, New Light enables beneficiaries to build safer, healthier, and more independent futures.
