Tiljala SHED (Tiljala Society for Human and Educational Development) is a Kolkata-based nonprofit dedicated to uplifting vulnerable and marginalized communities, especially children and women from ragpicker and low-income backgrounds. For over three decades, Tiljala SHED has been providing access to education, skill development, livelihood opportunities, health care, and social empowerment.
With a strong focus on child education, women’s empowerment, and sustainable community development, Tiljala SHED runs after-school learning centers, vocational training programs, scholarships, and initiatives for nutrition, performing arts, and sports—ensuring a holistic approach to breaking cycles of poverty.
Tiljala SHED proposes to implement the Holistic Quality Education Support Program for 100 vulnerable children from economically disadvantaged and socially marginalized communities residing in the Park Circus, Dhapa, Tangra, and adjoining slum areas of Kolkata. These communities are characterized by poverty, overcrowded living conditions, limited access to educational resources, low parental literacy levels, and a high risk of school dropout, child labour, and social exclusion.
The project aims to ensure that children not only remain enrolled in school but also receive the academic, emotional, social, and developmental support necessary to thrive and achieve their full potential. Through a comprehensive and child-centric approach, the program will address the multiple barriers that hinder educational attainment among vulnerable children.
The project will provide regular after-school academic support and remedial education to strengthen foundational learning in subjects such as Mathematics, Science, English, and Bengali. Children will receive access to innovative learning materials, educational aids, digital learning opportunities, and personalized mentoring to improve learning outcomes and academic performance.
To reduce the financial burden on families and encourage school retention, the project will provide educational support in the form of school uniforms, school bags, stationery, learning materials, and other essential educational resources. Regular monitoring of attendance, academic progress, and well-being will be conducted to ensure each child receives the necessary support.
Recognizing that education extends beyond classroom learning, the program incorporates a range of extracurricular and life-enrichment activities. Children will participate in Taekwondo training to build discipline, confidence, self-defense skills, and physical fitness. Creative development opportunities such as fine arts, music, guitar classes, storytelling, and cultural activities will nurture self-expression, creativity, and talent development.
The project will also focus on leadership and character building through Scouts activities, group learning exercises, community engagement initiatives, and an annual residential Scouts camp. These experiences will help children develop teamwork, communication, problem-solving abilities, leadership skills, resilience, and a sense of social responsibility.
To address issues of malnutrition and support healthy growth, supplementary nutrition in the form of milk, fruits, and nutritious snacks will be provided regularly. Health and hygiene awareness sessions will also be conducted to promote positive health practices among children and their families.
Parental engagement will form a key component of the project. Regular parent meetings and awareness sessions will encourage families to actively participate in their children’s educational journey and strengthen support systems at home.
The project will culminate in various educational and recreational events, including Sports Day, Annual Prize Distribution, cultural celebrations, and talent showcases, providing children with opportunities to demonstrate their achievements and build self-confidence.
Through this integrated intervention, the project seeks to create an enabling environment where vulnerable children can access quality education, develop essential life skills, improve their overall well-being, and emerge as confident, responsible, and empowered individuals capable of breaking the cycle of poverty and building a brighter future for themselves and their communities.
