Since its inception in 1964, SOS Children’s Villages of India (SOS India) has expanded its programs for children at a rapid pace for over 59 years, we work with children in 22 states through our 32 SOS Children’s Villages and 32 community projects in India.
For over 5 decades SOS CV India continues to provide children without parental care or at the risk of losing it, a value chain of quality care services that ensures comprehensive child development. However, the profile of children coming to our programs has been changing over the years and especially during the COVID Pandemic. After an in -depth analysis of these trends SOSCV India customized its care interventions to the needs of the changing profiles of children in need of care and protection. Our child care services have evolved into a ‘Basket of care solutions’ offered to these different needs of different children. These customized care interventions such as, Family Like Care, Family Strengthening, Kinship Care, Short Stay Homes, Foster Care, Youth Skilling, Emergency Childcare and Special Needs Childcare are aimed at transforming lives and making children self-reliant and contributing members of society.
Today, over 6,700 children live in more than 440 family homes in 32 SOS Children’s Villages in 22 states/UTs from Srinagar to Kochi and Bhuj to Shillong, lovingly cared for and nurtured by nearly 600 SOS mothers and aunts. We are directly touching the lives of around 28,500 children every year through our range of care services.
Mission Statement: We build families for children in need, help them shape their own futures and share in the development of their communities.
Key Programmes of SOS Children’s Villages of India includes:
Project Udaan is an initiative by SOS Children’s Villages of India under its Family Strengthening Programme to empower women caregivers from vulnerable families in Kolkata. The project aims to equip 150 women with sustainable livelihood skills and support, thereby positively impacting over 300 children at risk of losing parental care. Through education support, livelihood enhancement, and community capacity building, the project seeks to break the cycle of poverty and ensure a happy, secure childhood for these children. Academic support classes and teaching materials will help prevent school dropouts and improve learning outcomes. Livelihood interventions, including self-help group formation, micro-enterprise support, and market linkages, will enable women to achieve financial independence. Capacity-building workshops, health and nutrition awareness, and Bal Panchayat activities will foster stronger, child-friendly communities. The programme will work in close partnership with local schools, government agencies, and community leaders to ensure holistic development. With a recommended duration of 3–5 years, the project aims for lasting impact through a cluster-based, community-driven model. Total proposed budget for the first year is ₹30,30,000, covering education, livelihood, community mobilization, monitoring, and administration. Ultimately, Project Udaan envisions empowered women, resilient families, and children thriving in a nurturing environment.
