Since 2015, Garden Reach Institute For the Rehabilitation and Research has started the project Day Care Special School and Rehabilitation Centre to cater to the needs of cerebral palsy, mentally challenged, Multiple Disability and autistic children from slum areas of Kolkata, Garden Reach Metiabruz Slums. GRIRR is working here to achieve the goal of 100% elimination of Illiteracy, alleviation of poverty, to creation of self-independence through rehabilitation services.
NGO Goal: Enhance the well-being of children, young adults and families affected by disabilities through comprehensive development (An Inclusive development of society, where children with disabilities and persons with disabilities have equal access to education, health, livelihood, and a good quality of life.)
There are very few service centres that cater to developmentally disabled children like those with Intellectual disability, cerebral palsy, and Autism. For families living in rural and peri-urban areas, these centres/services are out of reach. On the other hand, it is difficult for the existing centres to extend their services to every nook and corner of the above-mentioned areas. Lack of trained personnel and equipment adds to this problem of reaching out. Authentic information or data on disability is not available in these areas; many disabled persons are not yet even identified by the Govt authorities. As a result, Special Education, which is the most important service for this category of children, is missing in these areas despite the great need.
