Hi, I am Vikas Kumar.
I was abandoned at a very young age, and to this day, I don’t know how I ended up at a shelter home. People often label me as “intellectually disabled.” But am I? Let me tell you my story.
Growing up in the shelter home for special children, I learned early that the world had already formed an opinion about people like me. Many believe we can’t do basic things, that we cannot learn, adapt, or grow. But life had other plans for me.
When I turned 18, I was sent to Rescue and Relief Foundation’s Opportunity Skills Academy. That place changed everything. I learned serving, cooking, and all the skills needed to work in a café. With time, I got employed at Opportunity Café—a place that didn’t just give me a job, but gave me confidence, dignity, and a purpose.
Today, I earn my own bread. I work hard. I greet customers, serve them, talk to them, and sometimes even inspire them. I haven’t just redefined who I am—I’ve helped change how others see individuals like me.
People assume that we can’t think deeply or dream big. But we do. We have goals, and we work towards them just like anyone else.
By 2030, I dream of opening another Opportunity Café outlet.
I’ve been saving a little from my earnings every month, preparing for that dream. The support from generous people has brought me this far, and I know that with the same love and encouragement, we will build many more Opportunity Cafés.
I am nurturing the dream of opening the third wing of Opportunity Café. The kindness and generosity of people have brought us this far, and I truly believe that with the same love and encouragement, we can build many more Opportunity Cafés in the future.
Together, we are not just opening cafés—we are opening doors.
We are changing perceptions.
We are making dreams come true—mine, and those of countless resilient young adults who deserve a life of dignity and opportunity.
