About Us

Kolkata Mary Ward Social Centre (KMWSC), the development organisation of the Loreto South Asia Congregation, stands alongside the most marginalised with a simple yet powerful belief — every person deserves dignity, protection, and opportunity to thrive. Born out of the legacy of Sr. Cyril, whose life was dedicated to the less privileged, KMWSC carries forward her spirit of compassion and justice, reaching those who are too often forgotten.

For more than a decade, KMWSC has been a lifeline for children of migrant workers, survivors of trafficking, women in sex trade, tribal families, slum dwellers, and vulnerable adolescents. From the bustling lanes of Sonagachi to the fragile mangroves of the Sundarbans, from brickfields where childhoods are lost to labour, to border villages threatened by trafficking — our work touches the lives of thousands each year.

Our initiatives are woven across five thematic areas:

  • Women & Child Protection and Development – safeguarding childhoods, breaking cycles of exploitation, supporting survivors, and empowering women to reclaim dignity and agency.
  • Education & Health – providing learning opportunities for migrant children, remedial education in slums and rural areas, healthcare for sex workers and vulnerable families, and awareness on health and child rights.
  • Community & Skill Development – creating pathways to self-reliance through vocational training, nutrition programmes, menstrual hygiene initiatives, and innovative projects like Café & Bakery.
  • Environment & Sustainability – promoting resilience through organic sack farming, biodiversity conservation in the Sundarbans, and sustainable livelihoods for slum and rural communities.
  • Disaster & Pandemic Management – responding with compassion during crises, ensuring food, shelter, and recovery support for those most devastated.

At KMWSC, we do not just run projects — we build bridges of hope. A child once forced into rag-picking now dreams of becoming a teacher; a mother once silenced by stigma now leads her community with courage; a girl once at risk of trafficking now walks to school with pride. These stories remind us why we exist.

With the strength of our dedicated team and the trust of our partners, KMWSC continues to transform despair into resilience, and vulnerability into empowerment. Together, we dream of communities where every child learns, every woman leads, and every family lives with dignity.

Our Appeal

Unlock a Child’s Future. Gift a School Kit.

Her School Bag is a Plastic Carry Bag. You Can Change That.

She carries her dreams in a tattered, reused plastic carry bag. Her pencil is so small she can barely hold it. Her “notebook” is a collection of scattered, used papers. Yet, her eyes sparkle with a question: “What if?”

What if she could have a real school bag? What if she had her very own, colourful set of crayons to draw the world she sees in her dreams? What if she could drink clean water from her own bottle instead of worrying about getting sick?

For 500 children in the remote villages of Nadia, north and South 24 Parganas and the bustling slums of Kolkata, education is their only way out of a cycle of poverty. They are first-generation learners, brave pioneers in their families, clutching onto the fragile hope that a school certificate can bring. They are children of migrant labourers, whose classrooms are under the shade of a tree or in a temporary shelter, always one season away from being uprooted.

But their spirit is unbreakable. They walk for miles. They learn in the most challenging conditions. They are fighting for their future with a courage that would humble any of us.

They have the will. We provide the way. But we need your help.

Kolkata Mary Ward Social Centre, backed by 150 years of the Loreto Sisters’ legacy in education, is guiding these children. We don’t just teach them; we find them, nurture them, and lovingly mainstream them into formal government schools. We are the bridge between a life of struggle and a life of dignity.

Your gift is not just a set of items. It is a badge of dignity, a toolkit for dreams, and a signal to a child that they matter.

For just ₹750, you can gift one complete School Kit to a child, containing:

  • A sturdy School Bag to carry their dreams with pride.
  • A Water Bottle to keep them healthy and hydrated.
  • Exercise & Drawing Books to write their stories and paint their imaginations.
  • A Pencil Box filled with pens, pencils, an eraser, a sharpener, and…
  • A set of Crayons — because every child deserves to colour their world with joy.

You’re Not Just Donating Supplies; You’re Funding a “First”.

For many of these children, this will be the first time they own something brand new. The first time they have a bag that is truly theirs. The first time they open a box of crayons that hasn’t been used by anyone else. You are giving them the unforgettable feeling of ownership and the powerful message: “You are worth investing in.”

Be the reason a child’s face lights up on the first day of school.

Be the reason a little girl no longer feels ashamed of her plastic bag. Be the reason a boy can finally draw the green fields and blue sky he sees from his makeshift home.

Let’s send 500 children to school not with worry, but with wonder. Let’s equip them not just with stationery, but with self-esteem.

Open your heart. Sponsor a School Kit today. Build a future, one child at a time.

Project Name Project Description Donate
Providing Education and Protection to Vulnerable Children at Sonagachi This initiative supports children of sex workers in Sonagachi, offering them safe spaces, education, and protection from exploitation. It nurtures their growth through remedial learning, life skills, and healthcare while also empowering mothers with awareness and support. By breaking intergenerational cycles of abuse and marginalisation, the project gives children a chance to dream of a better future, free from stigma and exploitation, and opens pathways to dignity, education, and hope.
I.D.E.N.T.I.T.Y. (Involvement, Development and Empowerment of in-Need Individuals Through You) The I.D.E.N.T.I.T.Y. Project supports children and families in Hastings, Dhapa, and Motijheel. It provides remedial education to out-of-school children and child labourers, later mainstreaming them into government schools. Alongside learning, it ensures preventive healthcare, access to identity documentation like Aadhaar, and awareness of child rights. By addressing multiple deprivations, the project helps children and families reclaim dignity, protection, and opportunities for a better future.
Kolkata Slums Project The Kolkata Slums Project supports children forced into ragpicking, begging, or exploitative work. It provides safe learning spaces, remedial education, healthcare, and life skills for adolescents. Families are helped to secure identity documents and access schemes. By breaking cycles of poverty and exclusion, the project ensures slum children and youth can envision brighter, healthier, and more secure futures, moving from mere survival to hope and opportunity.
Brickfield School Project (BFS) The Brickfield School Project provides education and protection to children of migrant brickfield workers, often excluded from schooling. It offers flexible, age-appropriate classes aligned with mainstream curricula, ensuring learning continuity despite migration. The project also provides health check-ups, safe migration awareness, and extracurriculars. By turning brickfields into spaces of learning and care, BFS gives children hope, dignity, and the chance to break free from poverty.
