Rationale and Context for Caring for Senior Citizens in Urban Kolkata:

Kolkata, like many urban areas, is experiencing a significant demographic shift with a growing population of senior citizens. With an increase in life expectancy and advancements in healthcare, a larger proportion of the population is aging, and their needs are becoming more complex. Many elderly individuals live independently or with minimal support due to the urban lifestyle that often sees younger family members migrating for work or leading busy professional lives. This creates an urgent demand for professional care services that cater to their emotional, physical, and medical needs.

Challenges Faced by Senior Citizens in Kolkata:

1. Isolation and Loneliness: Urbanization has led to the breakdown of traditional joint family systems, leaving many elderly citizens in Kolkata isolated. Without regular social interaction, they face mental health challenges such as depression and anxiety.
2. Health Concerns: Aging brings various health issues, such as chronic illnesses, mobility limitations, and cognitive decline. In a bustling city like Kolkata, access to healthcare can be difficult without proper support, especially for seniors living alone.
3. Safety and Security: The elderly population is vulnerable to safety risks, both in terms of physical health (such as falls) and financial exploitation. Urban settings, with their fast-paced environment, can sometimes overlook the specific needs of the elderly.
4. Lack of Professional Senior Care: While Kolkata has a rich culture of respect for the elderly, there is a growing gap in professional caregiving services that provide round-the-clock support, specialized elderly care, or even companionship.

This makes initiatives like Aevum (meaning eternity or agelessness in Latin) by Impact 360 Foundation crucial. By focusing on enhancing the quality of life for seniors, Aevum addresses these challenges in urban Kolkata through tailored care, emotional support, and professional services. Seniors require more than just basic care; they need companionship, medical assistance, and activities that promote emotional and mental well-being. Our approach includes:

• Holistic Well-being: Beyond physical care, we focus on the mental and emotional well-being of our clients, providing opportunities for social engagement, hobbies, and cognitive activities that keep their minds sharp and spirits high.
• In-Home Support: For seniors who prefer to age in place, Aevum provides caregivers who assist with daily activities, ensuring their home is a safe, comfortable environment.
• Professionalism and Compassion: Our team is trained to handle various aspects of elderly care with a deep understanding of the physical, emotional, and psychological challenges that come with aging.

The Support

This year, through Aevum by Impact 360 Foundation, we are setting a bold target: to provide compassionate and comprehensive care to 100 senior citizens in Kolkata. These elderly individuals, many of whom face loneliness, health challenges, and a lack of support, are in urgent need of assistance to lead fulfilling and healthy lives.

As part of TSW25K 2024, we are reaching out to corporates and individuals, requesting your support in helping us achieve this goal. With a contribution of ₹12,000 (Rupees Twelve Thousand Only), you can ensure that one senior citizen receives 12 months of personalized care, including medical attention, emotional support, and companionship. Your generous support will enable us to build service networks, deploy dedicated care managers, train and orient the team towards selfless services, outreach programs and activities and offer the seniors the dignity, love, and attention they truly deserve.
