Sanlaap is a leading organization in the fight against human trafficking across South Asia,
particularly within the Indian subcontinent. Established in 1987, by Indrani Sinha, a globally
respected figure in the development sector, Sanlaap has spent over three decades developing
innovative strategies to combat trafficking while creating programs that empower and rehabilitate
survivors, reintegrating them into society. With a vision of a future free from sex trafficking and
child sexual exploitation, Sanlaap works tirelessly to protect vulnerable girls from this pervasive
issue. Our efforts are concentrated in the red-light districts of Kolkata, various districts in West
Bengal, and states across India, forming the foundation of our prevention strategies. Sanlaap
collaborates with a wide range of stakeholders, including children, youth, local communities,
district and state administrations, government officials, police, and security forces like the Border
Security Force (BSF) and Seema Suraksha Bal. Sanlaap’s holistic approach includes a robust
youth program, legal aid services, and specialized training programs for law enforcement,
judiciary, and child protection workers.
In 1992, Sanlaap launched its first Drop-in Center (DIC), followed by the establishment of the
Sneha shelter home (a psycho-social rehabilitation centre) for young girls in 1993. With the
addition of the Srijoni vocational training and income generation initiative and the Mental Health
Intervention Program in 1996, Sanlaap expanded its scope of support for trafficking survivors.
The organization’s pioneering work has attracted collaborations with national and global
institutions, including the United Nations Development Program. Over time, Sanlaap’s initiatives
have extended across India and South Asia. The organization’s impact has been recognized
nationally, with awards such as the NationalAward for Child Welfare in 1997 and the National
Award for Women’s Empowerment in 2002
At Sanlaap, our mission is to restore dignity and offer hope to survivors of human trafficking,
many of whom are vulnerable young girls and women. To continue providing critical care and
transformative opportunities for these survivors, we rely on the support and generosity of
individuals and organizations who share our commitment to social justice. We are seeking
funding to ensure the sustainability and expansion of our holistic rehabilitation programs.
1. Medical Treatment: Survivors of trafficking often face serious physical health challenges
upon rescue, including malnutrition, untreated injuries, and various diseases. Funding is needed
to ensure these young girls and women have access to essential medical care, which
encompasses: routine health checkups, emergency treatments and specialized care for conditions
stemming from sexual abuse and reproductive health issues
2. Psychological and Mental Health Support: The emotional scars of trafficking are profound,
with survivors frequently suffering from trauma, depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress
disorder (PTSD). We employ dedicated mental health professionals who provide: one-on-one
therapy sessions and trauma-informed care interventions
3. Education and Vocational Training: Education and skill-building are fundamental pillars of
Sanlaap’s rehabilitation strategy. Many survivors have limited access to formal education, which
restricts their future employment opportunities. Funding will facilitate access to schooling and
tutoring and vocational training programs in tailoring, handicrafts, and language courses. This
educational support empowers survivors to develop marketable skills, fostering economic
independence and enabling them to secure stable employment in the future.
4. Extracurricular Activities and Personality Development: We prioritize the emotional and
social development of survivors through extracurricular activities. Our programs include dance,
music sports and life skills training sessions such as Karate. These initiatives help build selfesteem, encouraging healthy self-expression.
5. Shelter and Daily Needs: Providing a safe and stable environment is paramount for survivors.
Our shelters offer not only physical safety but also a nurturing community where survivors can
heal. Funds raised will cover: nutritious meals, hygiene products and clothing
6. Legal Aid and Advocacy: Sanlaap also provides legal assistance to survivors, aiding them in
navigating the complex legal processes necessary to prosecute traffickers and claim their rights.
Funding will support: Legal representation during court proceedings and assistance in obtaining
necessary legal documentation for future employment or education
Impact of Funding:
The purpose of this funding initiative is to secure the necessary resources to sustain and expand
Sanlaap’s vital services for survivors of trafficking. Your support enables survivors to access
education and vocational training, providing them with the knowledge and skills needed to
secure stable employment and reduce vulnerability to re-trafficking. Donations will ensure that
survivors receive comprehensive support for their physical, emotional, and mental recovery,
helping them regain confidence and lead fulfilling lives. Your funding will bolster Sanlaap’s legal
aid initiatives, ensuring that survivors receive the legal support necessary to fight for justice and
reclaim their rights. Finally, contributions will provide survivors with a safe environment,
restoring their dignity and enabling them to rebuild their lives free from fear and exploitation.
Every donation has the potential to provide healing, hope and a brighter future for girls and
women who have faced unimaginable challenges. With your support, Sanlaap can continue to
reach more survivors and advocate for a world free from trafficking.
