Don Bosco Ashalayam is a non-profit organisation dedicated to the education and rehabilitation of vulnerable children, particularly from the streets and slums. It is based in Kolkata, India. With almost 40 years’ experience, the NGO has worked to transform the lives of over 160,000 children by providing them with a safe, caring and educational environment.
Today, Ashalayam works in 2 key areas:
– More than a thousand street children and slum dwellers are supported to return to school. Ashalayam has set up 30 street schools to help and raise awareness among families on subjects such as education, health and child labour.
– 350 children live in 16 homes in and around Kolkata.
The children living in Ashalayam homes benefit from decent living conditions, healthy food, medical care and, above all, a quality education through schooling or vocational training. In this way, they can regain a certain carefree spirit and make a fresh start in life. Ashalayam supports and accompanies children in their development until they become autonomous and independent and have (re)found their place in society.
