Calcutta Rescue is a non-profit organization situated in the heart of Kolkata, established in the Kolkata region of West Bengal and registered in 1991 under the West Bengal Societies Registration Act 1961. With 33 years of dedicated service, CR focuses on supporting residents of slum areas most underserved by local and national governments, recognizing poverty as a multifaceted phenomenon. We take an integrated approach to alleviate it, operating under three key verticals: health, education, and living standards. In the health sector, we provide preventive and curative healthcare to slum dwellers through four fixed clinics and two mobile clinics. Our education vertical offers holistic support to slum and street children, serving as first-generation learners who require remedial coaching to continue their education in mainstream schools. Currently, CR manages two educational units catering to approximately 650 children. The third vertical focuses on improving living conditions by constructing or renovating toilets, bathing spaces, handwashing stations, and enhancing housing and infrastructure in slums. Over the years, CR has evolved into a dynamic organization, collaborating across sectors to implement programs tailored to the needs of vulnerable communities. We believe that poverty reduction requires a comprehensive approach, addressing the myriad challenges faced by the poor on a daily basis. By tackling issues in an integrated, sustainable manner, CR endeavours to enhance the quality of life for the most vulnerable members of our communities.
Dr. Jack Preger, a British doctor, started the organization after witnessing the severe poverty and lack of medical care in Kolkata. Initially, he provided free medical care to the poor and homeless on the streets. Over time, his efforts grew into a structured organization, formally established as Calcutta Rescue.
Since its inception, Calcutta Rescue has expanded its services to address a wide range of needs. Its medical programs include clinics, mobile health units, and specialized care for diseases such as tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS. The educational initiatives focus on providing quality education and support to children from impoverished backgrounds, helping them break the cycle of poverty.
The vocational training programs are designed to empower individuals with skills that can help them secure stable employment. These programs are particularly beneficial for ex-patients and underprivileged people, offering them a pathway to self-sufficiency and better economic prospects.

Starting at the age of 4, children are enrolled in our centers where we support them throughout their academic journey, up to higher education, ensuring they are prepared to secure successful careers. In addition to academic assistance, we actively encourage students to pursue extracurricular activities aligned with their inherent talents. Many of our students are passionate about sports such as football, kabaddi, and chess, and we provide specialized coaching every Saturday. Several of our students have even competed in district and state-level competitions, showcasing their abilities. We also support students with musical talents, offering classes where they learn to play instruments and participate in performances.
We are appealing to Impact 360 for support to continue fostering these extracurricular activities, which play a vital role in developing our students’ skills and confidence.
